Nowadays the typical business user has a mobile phone, a PDA and a laptop. Each of these devices has a different, in most cases unsatisfactory, method for entering text. This is too much for many users, so they often fail to make the most of the potential of these devices.

This means we rarely get to exploit the full potential of digital and mobile applications. For example, it still involves painstaking effort to write a text message (SMS). PDAs are generally used merely as a display device for digital agendas and address books, and as soon as you want to write a longer text you use your laptop or desktop – or perhaps the bulky, heavy folding keyboard that goes with your PDA.

Most users still cannot do without a notepad. People wanting to make quick notes still have no real alternative, apart perhaps from their laptop – but this again is a bulky and heavy solution.

In our modern world, writing notes on paper is a waste of time and resources. If you want to digitize the note you then have to type it or scan it into a device. Or you file it in paper form, which again takes up space and time, or throw it in the wastepaper basket, which is bad for the environment.

Thanks to their touchscreen, tablet PCs offer a similar high degree of functionality as paper. A touchscreen - regardless of its size - always allows the optimum use of space, because it combines input and output in the same interface.

What is striking, however, is that despite their ability to recognize handwriting, these devices often also come with a stowable but bulky keyboard. This is a tacit admission that even a perfectly functioning handwriting recognition system cannot replace a full keyboard.

A vision of the future: Ever-more capable, ever smaller mobile computers will be available in every conceivable combination. And the quality of touchscreen displays will eventually come very close to the print quality (resolution) of paper. More and more people will make the step to low-paper or even paper-free living.
