How does SpeedScript work?

What is revolutionary about SpeedScript is the fact that it is so easy to write vowels (a, e, i, o and u). When you tap on a key, a blue window appears that enables you to write the subsequent vowel by drawing a stroke from the consonant. The blue window follows your pen around, and shortens the distance you have to move it to write the next character.
But how does this help you write more quickly? The answer lies in linguistics and ergonomics:

  • There is a 50% probability that a consonant will be followed by a vowel or a space
  • Words consist of syllables, and every syllable consists of at least a vowel and a consonant
  • Drawing strokes with the pen is more intuitive and efficient than tapping, and enables a more natural flow of writing

Find out in detail how SpeedScript works. The following text explains how to use it step by step (using SpeedScript smart as an example):

START: The SpeedScript smart key area:

  • Nineteen yellow consonant keys for b, c, d, f, g, h, k, etc.
  • One black vowel key combining a, e, i, o, u and the space

LEVEL 1: Writing single consonants and vowels

Consonants: A consonant is written by touching a consonant key, just as you would with any other touchscreen keyboard.

Vowels and spaces: Touch the black vowel key with your pen and the blue window appears. Now simply draw a stroke to the desired vowel. A stroke to the left writes an "a". A downward stroke to the left writes an "e", and so on. And also important: a diagonal upward stroke to the right writes a space.

LEVEL 2: Writing syllables (directly combining a consonant and a vowel)

First touch a yellow consonant key.

  • This writes the consonant
  • The blue window appears

This is the same blue window that appears when you touch the vowel key, and it enables you to write a vowel by drawing a stroke in exactly the same direction. After each consonant (yellow) the vowels (blue) and the space (blue) can be written directly. The pen always remains in contact with the touchscreen.

  • You write the desired vowel with a stroke

LEVEL 3: More than one vowel or space, and the letters “x”, “y” and "z"

It is possible to write several vowels or spaces one after another (e.g. ai, ea, iou) as follows: Once you have written a vowel, you simply draw another stroke to write another vowel or space. The number of consecutive vowels and spaces you can write in this way is unlimited.

To write a “y”, you tap on the “xyz” key. To write an “x”, tap on this key and make an upward stroke to the left. To write a “z”, tap on the “xyz” key and make a vertical stroke.
