Quicker text entry: touchscreen or keyboard?

SpeedScript makes sense anywhere where there is no room for a standard QWERTY keyboard – mobile computers are a good example. You can’t use a mobile computer efficiently unless you have a usable and effective means of entering text. Methods such as text messaging keypads, handwriting recognition, and miniature QWERTY keyboards are of only limited use.

But equip a mobile computer with a pen and touchscreen, and you can make optimum use of the limited space available: by using the touchscreen for both input and output, you can make the screen larger and save weight at the same time.
The fact that many manufacturers supply their devices with Bluetooth or other full-size keyboard proves two things: that fast text input is important, but that so-called mobile devices have fallen short of their promise.
The numerous devices fitted with a miniature typewriter keyboard are yet another response to the need for a usable text input method.
These devices rely on the fact that users are familiar with the key layout – and compared with Transcriber or handwriting recognition they really do deliver on this promise. Even so, they still fail to optimize writing efficiency, and users pay the penalty in the form of greater weight and reduced screen size.

Only an input method designed specifically for small mobile devices can allow greater efficiency in the long term. The following are examples of mobile touchscreen computers where SpeedScript comes into its own:

Smart phones
Unlike conventional mobile phones, smart phones come with a touchscreen and stylus. These can be used to enter text for the integrated calendar, sms, e-mails or, for example, the phone’s notepad – quickly and conveniently.
PDAs
To use PDAs efficiently (and the wireless LAN functions most of them come equipped with these days), you have to be able to enter text. SpeedScript allows you to do so quickly and conveniently, replacing conventional methods such as handwriting recognition and Graffiti.
Tablet PCs
Tablet PCs combine the strengths of a notebook with the advantages of pen and paper. The touch-sensitive screen makes the PC into an electronic notepad with all the advantages of Windows. SpeedScript enables tablet PC users to enter text quickly and thus make optimum use of their equipment.
UMPCs
Ultra mobile PCs are new mini-tablet PCs that are not much bigger than a PDA but feature a fully functional Windows XP operating system. SpeedScript enables users to get the maximum out of these devices, keeping them truly ultra mobile.

The range of potential applications for SpeedScript will continue to grow. The popularity of interactive television, multifunctional watches, GPS systems and computers for cameras and home electronics means that there will be a steady increase in demand for an ultra-compact text entry system like SpeedScript.
